EXERCISES
THE SATISFACTION ANALYSIS
Understanding what you want more of and less of, as well as things you want to start and stop doing can help you quickly assess what needs to change to make your life and career more satisfying.
Step 1:
Take a sheet of paper. At the top of the page, write “I want more…” and then start listing what you want more of in your life and in your career. Don’t worry about editing. Don’t worry about the order you write things in. Don’t worry about mixing life and career issues in a single document. Don’t worry about being too serious – “I want more clients” followed by “I want more chocolate” is perfectly acceptable. Just start writing and let your mind go wherever it wants to go.
Step 2:
Take a new sheet of paper. At the top of the page write, “I want less…” Again, don’t edit yourself. Free associate and write down anything that pops into your mind.
Step 3:
Do the same thing for “I want to start…” and “I want to stop…”
Step 4:
Prioritize your entries from each list. Identify the things you need to change immediately, the ones that you can live with for a little while longer and the ones you can live with indefinitely.
Step 5:
Make a master list of high priority items from all 4 lists. Assign real time-frames to each item (e.g. this week, within the next month, within the next 3 months, etc.).
Step 6:
Set a date on your calendar for revisiting this exercise as you near the completion of your high priority items.
